Radio with Mail Art for Japan Charity Call
--- Give hope to the victim and send radios----

This is not a call for an art show, but for donating radio to people in Miyagi in Japan who are victims of Tunami and are evacuating or surviving at home. Many people still do not have TV or radio or no home or job or even lost their family members. I have noticed in IUOMA that many people want to express their prayer and hope for Japan and victim of the earthquake, so I have been looking for some chance to send your messages (or mail art) with something to donate.

Deadline
I will set the deadline 3 weeks from today on 5/20,
but if they are still asking for radios, I will put up another "call" later. Depending on how much they can get radio from other people.

Address
You can send to my address and I can send all together as a group.

Text Festival, 2011

Welcome to the Text Festival.

The Text Festival in Bury is an internationally recognised event investigating contemporary language art (poetry, text art, sound and media text, live art). Opening on 29 April 2011, the next Festival will be its third manifestation and run into July.

Against the background of global stylistic multiplicity, the use of language spans many artforms and may even be a unifying field of enquiry, a new definition and a new field of international linguistic art practice and dialogue. The Bury Festival is the leading focus of language in 21st Century art.

The Festival specialises in experiments, in new experiences, in performances and exhibitions that mix artforms in ground-breaking combinations that challenge traditional language art boundaries and offer artists a forum for dialogue and exchange of ideas.

TRAX 0982 XTRA - REPRINT

Vittore Baroni, Gennaio 2011 - vittorebaroni@alice.it

(note di copertina originali)
TRAX 0982 XTRA
One year after the reprint as a free download and limited edition cd of the Trax 0983 Anthems project, Radical Matters reproposes with the same formula the first vinyl album produced by the atypical group/label TRAX in the distant year 1982. Following up a series of audiocassettes assembled with similar methodologies (Technodeath, Horrorbox, The Cop Killers, etc.), this pioneering album conceived and coordinated by Piermario Ciani synthesized brilliantly the idea of a “telematic” (and “modular”) music, composed and played through collaborations at distance, a concept explored before the age of Internet both by activists of the heterogeneous international “tape network” and by exponents of the “serious” electronic music scene, for example Pietro Grossi. As usual in this series of reprints started in 2007 with the double cd Rednight, Gianluca Becuzzi took care of the remastering from the original vinyl and added a new experiment in composition at distance (NewXtra). Nigel Ayers is the only participant of Xtra that has been involved again, creating thirty years later an ideal bridge between the two projects. For the occasion, I immersed myself once again in the archive of memories, digging up some images and documents of the period (the Grand Trax 0184 box, in particular, contained some graphics originally created for a deluxe edition of the Xtra lp, never completed), added here as an extra bonus and testimony of the multimedial disposition of the whirl of products and events that TRAX got under way between 1981 and 1987.

Whatever happened to the original TRAX Units? Some friends (to whom this reprint is dedicated) have sadly come to an untimely end, others are still active in areas connected to the artistical and musical scene, even with high-profile results (like Massimo Giacon in the fields of design, comics and contemporary art, or Martin Hall, who has become in Denmark a cult writer and composer), yet others are today professors of high repute or hold public offices in the cultural sector (Martina, Ciullini). If you appreciated the unique mixture of bizarre new wave, darting elettropop, ferocious industrial-noise and minimalist ambient of Xtra, let us know, we will feel more motivated to retrieve a few other rare relics. Once more, my warmest thanks go to all the authors involved and to Gianluca Becuzzi and Sandro Gronchi, without whose genuine enthusiasm this work would have never seen the light of day.

Vittore Baroni, January 2011 - vittorebaroni@alice.it

This record has not been produced, as usually, by one or more bands going into a recording studio with some compositions ready to be performed and later transferred onto vinyl.

This record is the final result of a process that did not take into account the musical, stylistic or compositive necessities of the various participants.

The Central Unit 01 contacted a selected number of individuals acting as Peripheral Units in a project of crossed interferences.

Some Peripheral Units prepared a base-track on tape that was forwarded by 01 to other Units for further elaboration.

The graphic scheme on the cover represents the development of the subsequent crossings: e.g. the track Gamma Thetan, that opens the TRAX side of the record, is the mix that results from a sound base produced by Unit 04, forwarded to Unit 08 who elaborated it and then forwarded it to 02, who after working on it returned the tape to 01, functioning as the data processing centre.

The project Trax 0982 Xtra proposes a workable model but does not exhaust its possibilities.

The series of ten modular compositions on this LP is just one among many possible combinations.

Trax 0982 Xtra presents audio pieces without a composer performed by inexistent ensembles that met only through a network of reproduction technologies and communication media.

(original cover notes)
TRAX 2011 NEWXTRA
Where Angels Can't Land.

Gianluca Becuzzi, Gennaio 2011
The conceptual and operative scheme that I devised for Trax NewXtra, the new project of “modular composition” with the participation of six Units, four Italians and two from other countries, is a little different from the original one. Instead of adopting the scheme of crossed collaborations employed in 1982, I opted for a radial system. Acting as Central Unit, I provided the five Peripheral Units invited to the project (Ayers, Balestrazzi, Orsi, Riparbelli, Summers) with the same audio input, a series of dronic bases. I asked to each Unit to record a different track for each base I provided, not overmixed but as a separate track. In this way, once all the contributions had been collected, I was able to freely recombine all the different pieces of the audio puzzle into a single suite, titled Where Angels Can't Land. Of particular interest is the fact that, with this scheme, we gave form to a sort of “deaf orchestra” in which all the musicians played together without hearing each other. Only the coordinator/director of the orchestra or Central Unit (me) has been able to hear and (partially) control the global sound of the ensemble. In this sense, the radial structure of NewXtra works exactly in the opposite way compared to the old Xtra, where each Unit answered to the audio input provided by the preceding Unit in a chain of vertical stratifications. If you wish, NewXtra also represents a sort of semi-controlled application of the aleatory theories of John Cage.

Ken Friedman catching up...letter and catalog excerpts

Dear Friend,

With regret, I observe that I owe letters to most everyone I know. This
is a quick catch-up and an apology for my long silence.

At the beginning of 2008, I moved to Melbourne, Australia, to take up a
dean’s post at Swinburne University of Technology. While I expected
changes to my life, I have been astonished to discover just how many
changes my new life involved. The most significant is a change in tempo
and focus. My life as a professor focused my own research and teaching.
My current life is dedicated to ensuring that others have the resources
for their teaching and research. I expected the change: as researchers,
we suit ourselves; as deans, we serve others. What I did not expect was
the enormous shift in time – I’ve known deans and even a vice
chancellor or two who find the time for their research while helping to
manage a university. I’m still seeking the appropriate balance. Most
deans hold managerial roles before taking on this job. I moved directly
to a dean's role from a life in research and writing....

...As a very late greeting, I’m attaching a catalog to my 2009
exhibition, 99 Events. I planned to send it out two years ago in the
letter I never wrote.

Easter greetings and best regards,

Ken

Tim Hetherington, Chris Hondros , Ai Wei Wei , and justice for and all the artists forgoten by the Wester Interests .

Tim Hetherington, Chris Hondros , Ai Wei Wei , and justice for and all the artists forgoten by the Wester Interests .

While the defensors or the institutional art look and talk exclusively about Ai We Wei’s cause for political, economic and personal interests…. artists have being killed and arrested all over the world everyday for decades.

Let’s be sincere , now they only talked about Tim Hetherington because he was English and Oscar nominated ( the Anglo-Hegemony always have priority, Ai wei wei, even being Chinese always defended these same cultural Anglo- American values to please the Western Richs and critics ) … ………….even so it is some progress. Let’s see if it is going to make people talk more about this ….. or if the “Voices of the art world and the free world” will still keep only defending their own interests.

Chris Hondros :
here I keep the same test I wrote for Tim Hetherington . I want to see Ai We Wei free and unspoilted, I want to see justice for all.
I MEAN FOR ALL !!! NOT ONLY FOR THE ONES THAT DEFEND THE INTEREST OF THE RICHS OF THE WESTERN COUNTRIES.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— Listen, all the time I defend my view , defensor of the free world from USA and Europe come to argue with me. It seens they only defend democracy if you have exactaly the same opinion.
Not saying that i am from Brazil…. i DO have experience with artists being arrested and people of my own family only for defending democracy. It isn’t a theory to me . It isn’t a noble ideal as it is for easily manipulated art critics and people of the art world in general . It is real.

Cyber Attacks on Change.org

Dear Christine,

The petition demanding the release of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has nearly 100,000 signatures.

Here's how we know it's really gotten Beijing’s attention: For the past four days, the Change.org website has been repeatedly targeted by cyber attacks coming from China that aim to bring our site down, which would keep people from signing the petition.

Our engineers are working around the clock to fend off the attacks and, for now, the petition is still up.

We need to let the Chinese government know that illegal tactics from within its borders won't stop the mounting pressure on them to release Weiwei. If you haven't already, please click here to share the petition on Facebook to keep spreading the word.
To recap: Acclaimed dissident artist Ai Weiwei -- who helped design the famed “Bird’s Nest” stadium for China’s Olympics -- was arrested on April 3rd by Chinese security forces at the Beijing airport. His office and studio have been ransacked, and no one has heard from him since.

The international art community banded together, demanding his release -- and the directors of more than twenty leading museums (including the Tate Modern, Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim) started a petition on Change.org that has garnered worldwide attention, including in the New York Times, LA Times, and Guardian.

The campaign has helped to give rise to an international outcry. Political leaders around the world are calling for Weiwei's release and activists have organized peaceful protests at Chinese embassies and consulates.

Though China is desperate to silence its critics, the pressure to free Weiwei continues to grow. You can help by asking five friends to sign the petition:

http://www.change.org/petitions/call-for-the-release-of-ai-weiwei

Autocratic governments know that the internet is a democratizing force, and they'll do everything they can to suppress online activism. Know that we stand with you for change, and that we will continue to fight to make sure your voice can be heard.

- Patrick and the Change.org team

P.S. Due to these repeated attacks, our site may be slower than usual or unavailable at times over the next few days. Thanks for your patience.

Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt - Chinese Box Reveiw

Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt is one of those gypsies who do their stuff on the margin of what is hip even in a such "hip-immune" field as experimental music. His Friends of Sagittarius records as well as other platforms he manages revolve around a community of musicians of different styles and approaches.
One of his outlet is "accidental guitar" style which his own genuine approach to composition as well as intuitive improvisation.
Chinese Box hits the sky with its droney lo-fi cloud of intense and dreamy microspace. What I loved the most is that it goes straight to the point, not getting into the place where the musician depletes himself from the fresh ideas. A wholesome bit of music, rich, tasty and healing.
